How to change your card’s PIN

Posted in Banking tips

Have you just received a new card from NAB? Are you wondering how you’re going to remember the PIN? Don’t panic, you can change your PIN at a NAB ATM, any time.

When you receive a new card, your PIN will follow a few days later in the mail. The PIN we send you is secure but, if you think it would be easier to remember a PIN by choosing one yourself, you can do that instead.

Changing your PIN is easy

To change your PIN:

  1. Memorise the one we send you then destroy the PIN letter.
  2. Choose a four digit PIN of your own.
  3. Go to your closest NAB ATM.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to select a new PIN.

You’ll need to enter your current PIN first. The next screen you see will give you the option to select a new PIN on the lower left hand side, as you can see below.

ATM screen

You won’t be charged for changing your PIN and you can change it as many times as you like.

Keep it safe

Make sure that the PIN you choose is safe and secure. Your PIN should be four digits long and should not be your date of birth or something easily recognisable to another person. Don’t write it down or store it somewhere it could be found and used if someone found your card or wallet.

If you don’t keep the PIN secure, and your card and PIN is used by someone else, you might be responsible for the loss of any money taken from your account. You can read more Electronic Banking security tips in our Money Basics blog.

  13. MAtt says:

When will NAB have the ability to change PIN online like CBA and the other banks?

  14. Ali says:

This should be online. Crazy that you have to find an ATM to change a pin that you can’t remember because its new – especially when you’ve just transferred to NAB and have 3 different cards with 3 different pins. The PIN I have doesn’t work for one of my cards. Guess I’ll need to go to a branch, get a new one sent which will take 5 days, and then find an ATM to change my PIN… Luckily I haven’t cancelled my Westpac card yet so I can still get some cash..

    • NAB says:

      Hi Ali,

if you call into a NAB Branch, we’d be able to give you a generic pin over the counter which you can then change to one of your choosing at a NAB ATM.

Provided you go to a Branch with an ATM at the front, it can be resolved very quickly ^SN

  15. Nigel Stringfellow says:

I’m really impressed with NAB,I just called to reset a PIN on a debit card that I haven’t used for some months,I had forgotten the PIN,called the NAB team and after answering a few security questions they reset it to a generic code that I can reset at an ATM,how easy is that..very quick, and the guy I spoke to was very friendly and professional.
    Good Work NAB.

  16. Linda Mortimer says:

I am about to travel overseas and don’t know my pin for either of my cards. What do I need to do as I am assuming that I will need a PIN for transactions instead of signing?

    • NAB says:

Hi Linda, you can get a PIN for your cards by visiting a NAB store or by calling us on 13 22 65 from 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, or 9am-6pm on weekends (AEST/AEDT). Since you’re travelling overseas, don’t forget to advise us of your travel plans. You may also check out our NAB Traveller Card here. I hope this helps ^DH

I feel so helpless, before I left Melbourne I did not realise that I couldn’t use my debit car to withdraw money. I cannot remember what my pin is for my visa debit card. Is there a possibility of having it changed over the phone? Pls help!!!

    • NAB says:

Hi Ssm, since you are o/s we cannot provide you with a temporary PIN – we can however send you a replacement PIN (you can request this via secure message A replacement PIN does take 15-20 business days to arrive at your o/s address. I understand that this might be urgent, if so you can contact Visa Global. They can organise a temporary card or emergency cash for you, here’s how to contact them If your card has been blocked, please send me your contact detail to and I’ll have the team call you back. Alternatively you can call us directly on +61 3 8641 9083 ^LB

  19. Anna says:

I’d like to set up a pin for my 2 nab credit cards. i have used a pin before and do not know what they currently are.
Can I do this via the internet or phone?

    • NAB says:

Hi Anna, if you can access to a NAB ATM, the easiest way to change your PIN would be to call us on 13 22 65 (or +61 3 8641 9083 if you’re overseas) from 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, or 9am-6pm on weekends (AEST/AEDT). 20. Liam says:

About a couple months ago i’ve gotten my card and pin and haven’t been able to use it because i didn’t need to. Now i want to use it and i’ve forgotten the pin i got. Is there any way i can get the pin back or change it?

    • NAB says:

Hi Liam, we can either reset this for you or send out a new one – either way you are able to change this at any NAB ATM once set up to something you are likely to remember. Feel free to send a secure message via internet banking or give us a call on 13 22 65 to have this updated ^TC

  23. Julie says:

Why have I received a new PIN in the mail but I already have a pin do I have to go to the ATM and change back to my PIN?

    • NAB says:

Hi Julie, we have sent PIN’s out to customers to get ready for August 1st – I apologise you received one when you have one set up. The new PIN will override the current one on the card so if you would like to change this you will need to visit a NAB ATM, sorry for the inconvenience ^TC

  24. dee says:

I tried to change my pin but the atm said wrong pin entered so I phoned nab and they reset it so I tried the next day to change it as instructed but it wont except my new pin and now says error wrong pin What do I do now

    • NAB says:

Hi Dee, it sounds odd that the PIN doesn’t work – if you can visit a NAB branch and have them reset the PIN for you again and help you change it, this might make things easier for you ^TC

  25. Terry Crabb says:

Totally unimpressed with NAB that you do not provide the option to change PIN online.
Why is this not an option?

    • NAB says:

Hi Terry, I apologise we don’t have this option and I’ve passed your feedback onto the team – if you want to update your PIN you can send a secure message through internet banking and we will post a new PIN to your address ^TC

hi I haven’t used my card in a while and have forgot my pin I work till 5 and are unable to get to a branch. is there any other way to change the pin

    • NAB says:

Hi Sam, if you send a secure message through internet banking we can send a PIN out to you or just give us a call on 132265 from 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, or 9am-6pm on weekends (AEST/AEDT). If you’re overseas, the number to call is +61 3 8641 9083 ^TC

  27. Lyn Stevens says:

I wish to change my pin to one I can remember and I am not near an ATM, it is 120 klms to the nearest one. We do have a NAB in town but no ATM so how can I change it?

    • NAB says:

Hi Lyn, unfortunately we are unable to set up a PIN for you- we can only mail PIN’s out to customers, however this is a randomly selected 4 digit number that we do not have control of. To reset your PIN to digits of you choice, you need to visit a NAB ATM ^NJ

  28. Matt says:

Im currently overseas and will need to use my credit card in the next few weeks. I have forgotten my pin number so will not be able to use it. Is there any way i can get a new pin mailed to my parents house so ill be able to use it? Im going to need to use it in the next few weeks so its semi urgent! If that cant be done can i ring from an overseas phone and talk to a team member and change it over the phone? Thanks.

  29. Peter James Secrett says:

I have forgotten my pin number and my card is blocked. I am overseas and desperately need to reopen my card

  30. Jane says:

I got my pin in my mail box a few days ago, but I haven’t got my key card yet. Is this normal?

  31. Toby says:

Just set up 3 new accounts with nab. Received the 3 debit cards and the 3 pins, but on the generic letters there doesn’t seem to be anything to identify which pin is for which card?

  32. Rashmi says:

i am rashmi i got my atm befor a month bt becoz of some carelessnesss i lost letter, so i dont knw my first pin code which i dont knw, how to get itttt….

    • NAB says:

      Hi Rashmi,

You can request a new pin be sent to your address on file by sending through a Secure Message via your Internet Banking with your request. It will take up to 3 business days for the pin to reach you, once ordered.

Alternatively, you either visit a NAB Branch or call us on 13 22 65 Mon-Fri 8am-7pm and Sat-Sun 9am-6pm AEDT/AEST to request a pin reset over the phone.

Note that is the case of a PIN reset, you will be provide with a default pin for your card and you will need access to a NAB ATM (not rediATM) as you will then need to change the default pin to one of your own choosing.

      Hope this helps! ^SN

  33. Jarrod says:

I received a new NAB Credit Card in the mail today.

Will I need to wait for a letter containing a PIN for the card to arrive before I can use the card?

    • NAB says:

Hi Jarrod, your PIN should arrive in the mail in a couple of days, however if you need to use the card urgently and can get to a NAB-branded ATM, you can give us a call on 13 22 65 to request a PIN reset on your card. You’ll then be issued with a generic PIN over the phone, which you’ll be able to change to the PIN of your choice at a NAB ATM ^DH

  34. noah says:

I have my card, I just can’t remember my pin plz help

  35. Alison says:

hi can a nab staff member change it while your in the branch?

  36. Adam says:

The CBA makes PIN changes available via NetBank, this feature has been available for years. NAB forces customers to go to an ATM to change their PIN to something they have selected.

It’s inconvenient getting to an NAB ATM, and there are personal security/safety concerns standing at an ATM fumbling around for a long period of time as you go through the process of changing PIN.

When will NAB make PIN changes available through online banking?

    Thank you.

    • NAB says:

Appreciate the feedback Adam, I’ve passed it on to the team – there is no expected due date on this feature so please stay tuned to our Social Media channels for any announcements in that regards ^DH

  37. Kim says:

I am a new NAB customer (unwillingly but my partner has his mortgage with you so I HAD to change). I cannot believe that for 2 years now people have been asking for the ability to change their PIN online and yet this feature has not been released! Comon NAB it’s time to get with technology, I’m beyond shocked that this isn’t available when every other major back in Australia and New Zealand have this feature…

    • NAB says:

      Hi Kim,

Thanks for the feedback, it’s been passed on to the team – however, there isn’t an expected due date at current on a feature like this.
We will definitely let people know via this channel once something becomes available.

    • NAB says:

Hi Mia, you can arrange a new pin by visiting your nearest branch, sending a secure message or calling us on 13 22 65 between 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, or 9am-6pm on weekends (AEST/AEDT) ^RG

  43. Brett Keogh says:

It is irritating that you cannot change a pin online. Also annoying you need to go to an atm after your pin is changed to temporary pin.

Seems the only fix to this is to change banks (other banks allow it such as cba) as this has been causing disruption for customers for years on this thread and nothing is changing.

    • NAB says:

Appreciate your feedback on this Brett, I’ll pass it on to the team – if you have any other suggestions please let us know ^BH

  44. binni sharma says:

I was forgot my ATM pin code but I have tried with wrong code.then my card has been can I unblock my card?kindly confirm me asap

    • NAB says:

      Hi Binni,

Your card will block, for security purposes, for 24 hours if you’ve entered the wrong PIN three times.

If you know what your PIN number is, you may try it again after that time lapse.

If you do not remember your PIN, you may request a new one by calling us on 13 22 65 Mon-Fri 8am-7pm (Sydney/Melbourne times) ^SN

    • NAB says:

Hi Heechul, if you’ve lost your card, a new PIN will automatically be issued when the new card is, but if you have the card and you’ve forgotten your PIN, you can call us on 13 22 65 or visit your nearest branch and the team can issue you a temporary PIN on the spot. You just need to activate it at a NAB ATM ^BH

  48. Chloe says:

Absolutely appalling NAB that we are in 2015 and you cannot reset a pin number online!! I am overseas and have to wait 5 business days until one can be forwarded to my home address?! No words. 154

  49. Jagpal singh sandhu says:

  51. Adam says:

Hi. I just got not a brand card, but a replacement for a card that stopped working. I haven’t received a PIN letter yet, so I’m wondering since it’s a copy of the old one, does the PIN remain the same? I haven’t tried this yet.

  52. Greg says:

I am travelling overseas tomorrow and have discovered that I cannot remember my PIN for NAB visa card. I have not used this card for a transaction requiring a PIN in a long time. I am too scared to try some PIN numbers in case it gets blocked. How can I get a PIN and use my card overseas when I leave in 18hrs and its a weekend? Its strange that one cannot do this online. Reading entries on this thread, I conclude that your internet banking team I either incapable of providing a service that other banks provide or they are simply too arrogant to respond to customer feedback. 3 yrs worth of feedback on this issue has not borne fruit. Disappointing!

    • NAB says:

Hi Greg, we’re unable to update the PIN online but we can reset your PIN over the phone which then means you just have to go to a NAB ATM and update it to a PIN of your choice – I’m sorry this response won’t reach you in time, in future if it’s urgent pls give us a call on 132265 and the team can assist ^TC

  53. Greg says:

You are right your response was received after I left Australia. But guess what, I called 132265 countless times on Saturday the 12th & Sunday the 13th. The automated responsed would teminate after reminding me of the hrs of opearation and I was calling within those hours! Dissapointed does not even begin to describe how I feel!

  54. Anton says:

I have read all the comments since 2012 on this page and for 4 YEARS your customers has the same issues HOW TO CHANGE THE PIN BEING OVERSEAS???!!! and NAB has’t done anything for 4 years to offer a simple solution to do it considering all available technologies. Simple online log in into internet banking and change the PIN I presume will work very good and save all your clients lots of time and money and stress!!!
I have spend 30 mins on the phone with NAB from overseas trying to figure it how to change my PIN they kept offering me 2 solutions which not suitable for any person who are overseas without PIN. 1. We will post you your PIN to your nominated address in 3 business dates! 2. We give you PIN over the phone but you need to go to NAD ATM :0)
Thanks you for not being helpful at all with your clients!

    • NAB says:

Appreciate your feedback on this Anton, I’ve passed this on to the team. I’m sorry for any frustration and inconvenience it’s caused, please send through an email to and we can see if there’s anything we can help with ^BH
